Large Boston Public Garden Sketchbook: Two women conversing on the street. Artist: Maurice Brazil Prendergast (American, St. John's, Newfoundland 1858-1924 New York). Dimensions: 14 1/8 x 11 3/16 in. (35.8 x 28.4 cm). Date: 1895-97.
In this vibrant watercolor, Prendergast integrates the white of the paper into the densely brushed composition, its parasol crowning an elaborate hat of raised poppies. The highly finished quality of the whole suggests its intended later use in another medium. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
